Our community interest statement

“Mère + Me CIC carries on its activities for the benefit of mothers in the first two years after birth, together with their babies, living in the London Boroughs of Barnet and Enfield, and, as the company’s activities grow, across Greater London. This includes mothers experiencing isolation or loneliness in early motherhood; mothers who have recently moved to their area or whose family and support networks live far away; mothers who cannot afford or cannot access paid-for antenatal and postnatal networks; first-time mothers, single mothers, and mothers from low income households; mothers at risk of or experiencing poor mental health and loss of identity during the perinatal period; and mothers who wish to build or sustain a small business, or return to work alongside caring responsibilities.”

The company was founded in response to a gap identified in Barnet and Enfield, and one that exists across London. Existing provision is largely designed around the child rather than the mother, and the warm, welcoming, non-clinical spaces where mothers can come together as women in their own right did not exist locally. Mère + Me exists so that no mother has to go through early motherhood feeling invisible or alone.

The asset lock

Mère + Me CIC is subject to a statutory asset lock. This means the company’s assets and any surplus it generates are permanently committed to the community it serves and cannot be paid out to members.

Any surplus is reinvested into our activities. In particular, it is used to subsidise and provide free places at events and on the six week postnatal programme for mothers on low incomes and those facing financial hardship; to cover venue hire, facilitators, materials and refreshments so events can remain free or low cost; to pay the people who deliver our community engagement, outreach and events; and to extend our reach to more mothers across Barnet, Enfield and London.

On a transfer of assets or on winding up, any residual assets transfer to an asset locked body prescribed in our Articles of Association, or, if none is prescribed, to another asset locked body with the consent of the CIC Regulator.

How we allocate free places

We hold a limited number of free places at every event. Those places are split between mothers who ask us directly and mothers referred to us by a professional, such as a health visitor, midwife, social prescriber or GP.

Places are allocated in the order requests are received. The only priority we apply is to a mother who has already been offered an alternative because an event was full — she comes first next time. Referral places held for professionals release into the general pool 72 hours before an event if they have not been taken.

We make no assessment of individual need, and there is no scoring or ranking of any kind. No mother is ever asked to evidence her circumstances. If we cannot place someone, we offer the next event and always point her to The Stroll Society and The Village, which are free, weekly and open to everyone with no booking needed.

Reporting

As a community interest company we file an annual community interest report (form CIC34) with the Regulator of Community Interest Companies, alongside our accounts at Companies House. Our reports are published here as they are filed, and are also publicly available on the Companies House register.
